Results of IRP Technology’s Development of Digital Twin Components for Nuclear Facilities Presented in a Report at the Scientific and Technical Council of Rostechnadzor

The relevance of analyzing the features of digital twins (DTs) as a modern tool for the creation and management of production facilities is confirmed by the accumulated experience in the development and implementation of DTs in Russian industries, as well as by the dynamics of DT adoption in various regions of the world, which significantly outpace industrial development indicators and are closely linked to them.

The report “Experience in the Application of Digital Twins in the Review of Complex Scientific and Technical Solutions” presented at the Scientific and Technical Council (STC) of Rostechnadzor, set out the results of IRP Technology’s development of digital twin components for nuclear facilities (NFs). The report analyzed the distinctive features of DTs, areas requiring improved management efficiency for nuclear facilities, and successful experience in the application of DTs for NFs, with particular attention paid to the experience of implementing projects in the field of multiphysics modeling.

Based on the report and the subsequent discussion, the STC members concluded that for the purposes of developing and managing advanced NFs, digital twins:

  • First and foremost, can serve as a means of accumulating knowledge about the facility under management at all stages of its lifecycle;

  • Can become a tool for the systematic assessment of competitiveness and for making decisions on the feasibility of developing and constructing NFs; for substantiating impact measures (significance) and priority areas for future development; for supporting the verification and optimization of design solutions; and for supporting the development and validation of new safety standards for advanced NFs;

  • Subject to code certification, can act as an impartial independent arbiter for the assessment of new design standards and new norms and regulations for innovative NFs.
